Sunday Morning Worship: Trust the Process

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)

This Sunday, join us in person or on Zoom for our March worship series, Trust, and our sermon entitled, “Trust the Process.”

Zentangle is a meditative drawing method using simple, repetitive pen strokes to form beautiful patterns. It has caught on all over the world because it’s much more than drawing; its process is a metaphor for life! Open your heart and mind and let the ORUUC Zentangle group guide you through this special service on the gifts of creativity, gratitude, and learning to trust the process.

Worship begins at 10 a.m. To join by Zoom, visit https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89079582989. Another option is to install the Zoom app on your device and choose, “Join Meeting,” then enter Meeting ID: 890 7958 2989.

The Split-the-Plate recipient for the month of March is Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC). ADFAC began in the mid 1980’s as a local ecumenical effort to provide assistance to impoverished families. As the broad needs of the low-income community became evident, the faith-based collaborative moved to become a 501(c)(3) public charity in January, 1987. Over the years, ADFAC has honored its roots developing a broad variety of programs designed to meet unfilled needs in the community and currently answers over 6,000 requests for assistance each year. ADFAC is the prime and preeminent social service agency in Oak Ridge and surrounding counties. Not only does ADFAC provide direct services to our needy community, it is also the clearing house for most other local social service agencies and churches. For more information, visit http://www.adfac.org. Please visit https://onrealm.org/oruuc/-/form/give/now to give as you are willing and able, or text “ORUUC” to 73256.

After the service, you're invited to join in coffee and conversation in the Social Hall. Youth and Adult Faith Formation classes take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Check out our regular Faith Formation opportunities for adults here: http://www.oruuc.org/faith-formation-for-adults and children and youth here: http://www.oruuc.org/religious-education. Celebration of Life for Dr. J. David Bowman

Celebration of Life for Dr. J. David Bowman

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Dr. J. David Bowman, or David as he was known to his friends, passed away on December 7th, 2024 at the age of 85. A celebration of David’s life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

David was born in Pleasantville, New York. He was the son of Margaret Safronia Rasnick and Cecil Bowman, both of Dickenson County, Virginia. His mother, Margaret Rasnick, attended Berea College in Kentucky, where she was Salutatorian. Margaret worked as a public-school teacher. She taught in the town of Manuelito, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation, in the early 1940s, where David attended kindergarten and part of elementary school. He left New Mexico for New York as a child, where he resided with his aunt Phoebe Rasnick, and her husband, Tom Della Badia.

David was an exceptional student. He was recognized for his outstanding math and science ability after excelling on the New York Regents Exam. He attended Caltech for college, graduating with his Bachelor of Science in 1961 and earning his doctorate in Physics and Mathematics in 1967. While at Caltech, David was Richard Feynman’s teaching assistant and is one of few who solved all of Feynman’s equations. After completing his doctorate, David embarked on a long, fulfilling and influential career in medium energy experimental nuclear physics, which lasted fifty-six years from 1967 to 2023. David worked at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, the University of Bonn, Germany, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Impressively, he continued to conduct experiments and publish physics articles at ORNL until he reached 2023.

He received many professional honors, including being named a senior fellow of the National Laboratory system in 1981, and earning the Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics in 2002. His research focused on the fundamental interactions at the subatomic level. He published his discovery of Beryllium 14 and Boron 17 in Physical Review letters in 1973.

At the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (now LANSCE), David performed the first measurements on compound nuclei. In 1993, he began a research program on Time Reversal Invariance and Parity Violations in Low Neutron Energies. He also started the effort to build a cold-neutron beamline at Los Alamos.  According to Marcel Demarteau, Director of the Physics Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, “he was a leading light in Nuclear Physics. . . further he lead the first suite of experiments to probe the nature of neutrons at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline of ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source.

In addition to his impressive accomplishments in physics, friends remember David as a charming and funny man who was committed to issues of social justice. He married his first wife, Wairimu Tabitha Gethaiga, who had immigrated from Kenya, in Los Angeles, California in 1964. He had two daughters with her, Warigia and Wangeci, and raised her daughter Njeri Bowman. He and Wairimu were avid organic farmers. Alongside his wife and mother, David filled their land in Piedra Loop with fruit trees, chickens, duck, geese and an extensive garden. David and Wairimu’s home was a gathering place and a refuge for any Kenyan visiting or residing in New Mexico. He was acknowledged as a Kikuyu elder in his wife’s hometown of Karema, Nyeri, Kenya, and was a significant contributer to educational causes in that region.  David used his scientific knowledge to become a creator of crabapple jam and mint jelly, and regularly won awards for his jams and jellies at the county level. He was extremely interested in issues of foreign affairs, national security and nuclear non-proliferation.

David met Rebecca Rumbaugh, his second wife, on Thanksgiving Day 2005. The connection was instant and grew into a bond that endured the test of time. David was there when Rebecca’s son, Jeremy, passed away and they were blessed to raise Jeremy’s two young sons, Logan and Evan Rumbaugh. They moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 2008 and were fortunate to have many wonderful friends and neighbors. Their home was frequently filled with hearty laughter and memorable celebrations. David was a loving husband, outstanding father, and beloved member of the community as well as an avid mushroom hunter, art collector, and wine connoisseur. He and Rebecca were members of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and many organizations that strive for equality and social justice.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Rumbaugh Bowman, and his daughter Warigia Margaret Bowman, as well as eight grandchildren, Logan Rumbaugh, Evan Rumbaugh, Renne Ngaruiya, Ali James Ngaruiya, David Ngaruiya, Olivia Estacio Entrop, Evelyn Estacio Entrop and Hugh Allan. He is also survived by his daughters by marriage, Erica Entrop (Darwin Estacio) and Meredith Entrop (John Allan). His daughters Wangeci Bowman and Njeri Bowman pre-deceased him, as did his first wife, Wairimu Tabitha Gethaiga Bowman and his stepson, Jeremy Rumbaugh.

The Split-the-Plate recipient for this Fifth Sunday in March is the Minister’s Discretionary Fund. The fund is available to help church members who are in a moment of financial crisis. Through the Minister’s Discretionary Fund, we’ve been able to pay a month’s rent or mortgage to help ORUUCians to maintain their housing. We can pay for an unexpected medical, dental, or prescription bill that would otherwise max out someone’s finances. We’ve paid utility bills to literally keep the lights on. The Minister’s Discretionary Fund also helps people in the larger Oak Ridge community with utility bills, food, and gas. When folks in need call the church for emergency assistance, the Minister’s Discretionary Fund is where the money comes from to pay a bill or offer relief. The fund is completely confidential: If you’re in need, only the minister need know, in order to access the fund. A bill can be paid safely and securely, with complete discretion. The Minister’s Discretionary Fund is available only through your generous contributions. Any cash or check or electronic gift you make today will help keep the Fund available to friends in need. Sunday Morning Worship: Beyond Welcome

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)

This Sunday, join us in person or on Zoom for our February worship series, Inclusion, and our sermon entitled, “Beyond Welcome.”

Have you ever been somewhere that proudly proclaimed, “All are welcome!” … but you just got the feeling that they didn’t really mean you? And have you ever had an experience of feeling so welcomed and cared for, like you could just feel that you were wanted there? Join worship associates Michael Bjerke and Michael Raymond to explore inclusion beyond welcome.

Worship begins at 10 a.m. To join by Zoom, visit https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89079582989. Another option is to install the Zoom app on your device and choose, “Join Meeting,” then enter Meeting ID: 890 7958 2989.

The Split-the-Plate recipient for the month of February is Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and Northern Mississippi. The first Planned Parenthood chapter in the state was formed in Oak Ridge in 1961, and many of the first volunteers and board members were from ORUUC. After the Knoxville office was destroyed by arson New Year’s Eve morning in 2021, the organization rebuilt and reopened their new building in October of 2024. While they can no longer provide abortions due to state law, Planned Parenthood continues to help those in need access those services. In addition, they continue to provide birth control, STI testing and treatment, prenatal and postpartum care, wellness and preventative care, gender affirming care, and current, factual reproductive health information. It is vital that we support an organization that provides true and factual information regarding reproduction and health issues. For more information, visit http://www.plannnedparenthood.org. Please visit https://onrealm.org/oruuc/-/form/give/now to give as you are willing and able, or text “ORUUC” to 73256.

After the service, you're invited to our Hugs & Quiches potluck lunch in the Social Hall. If you can, bring a dish to share—it doesn’t have to be a quiche—but if you can't, there will be plenty for all! There will be no regular Youth Faith Formation classes or nursery second hour so that children may eat with their families; the OWL class *will* meet as scheduled. Lóre will host her Meet the Minister gathering in the Sanctuary at 11:15. At 12:30, there will be a Centered in Love Vigil in the Sanctuary. Many of us are feeling heightened anxiety or concern due to current events. Join us after the potluck for a vigil (like that which we had after the election) to share what's on our hearts and minds. Sunday Morning Worship: Time on Two Crosses

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This Sunday, join us in person or on Zoom for our February worship series, Inclusion, as our minister, Lore Stevens, shares her sermon, “Time on Two Crosses.”

As Black History Month begins, let us celebrate the lives of two figures who were both Black and gay: Bayard Rustin and James Baldwin. What can we learn from those who have multiple marginalized identities? What inspiration can their lives lend ours?

In addition, they continue to provide birth control, STD testing and treatment, prenatal and postpartum care, wellness and preventative care, gender affirming care, and current, factual reproductive health information.

Sunday Morning Worship: Writing Our Story

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)

This Sunday, join us for our January worship series, Story. Lay Leader David Savoie will speak on “Writing Our Story.”

Our Story begins with the world into which we are born. All of it, from parents to planets, bodies to trees, our small group of people to the long history of humans: all of it fits and moves together to create the setting, the 'Givens', of our story. Now it is up to you: how will you write it? This month we are looking at "Story", in its role in defining who we are, our meaning and purpose and identity. But who or what is the creator of our story? What part of it do we get to write and what is out of our control? And what does that suggest about how we might live our lives?

Sunday Morning Worship: ZOOM ONLY

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This Sunday, join us for our December worship series, Presence, with a sermon entitled, “L.A.S.T.I.N.G. Through Adversity,” provided by Guest Minister, Rev. Clovice Lewis. Worship begins at 10 a.m. on ZOOM ONLY. Please install the Zoom app on your device and use Zoom Worship Service Meeting ID: 946 8973 5846.

In LASTING Through Adversity, Rev. Clovice Lewis reflects on the societal and political challenges faced over recent years, emphasizing the urgent need to counter authoritarianism and systemic hatred with transformative action. Drawing from sermons delivered since 2020, the author explores the deepening "dark woods" of societal division, exacerbated by political manipulation, systemic racism, and mass coercion. Lewis proposes his LASTING framework—Love, Adapt, Subvert, Transform, Innovate, Nurture, and Grow—as a guide for resilience and resistance. Rooted in Unitarian Universalist principles, this framework encourages fostering connection, adapting to change, subverting oppressive systems, and nurturing democratic values to cultivate a more equitable society. Offering hope amidst dire warnings, the Rev. Lewis urges bold action, grounded in compassion and resolve, to confront adversity and rebuild a society that values diversity, equity, and human dignity.

Our Split-the-Plate offering recipient for this fifth Sunday of the month is the Minister’s Discretionary Fund. Please GIVE HERE as you are willing and able, or text “ORUUC” to 73256.

The church building will be closed today. All Youth and Adult Faith Formation classes are on a break for the holidays. Please check with your group leader if you are part of a Circle or other church group that plans to meet in person today. This Sunday, join us for our December worship series, Presence. We welcome the Rev. Laura Bogle as our guest minister. She will share a sermon entitled, “The Good News.”

December is a liminal time, a time of transitions, and of being in-between—between the old year and the new; between the conception and the birth; between the light and the dark. In this season of transitions, it might be easy to be overwhelmed by looking back or looking forward. We certainly consume enough bad news to make us fret about past decisions and be anxious about the future. But December invites us to the present moment, tuning our hearts to a different frequency. What’s our good news?

In the ORUUC Gallery: Works by Curt Imerman

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

From December 5 through January 31, stop by ORUUC to walk through the gallery to view works by Curt Imerman. Curt considers himself to be a “self-taught” artist. He started drawing with pencil and paper at an early age. Curt’s early interest in drawing lead to a career as a Mechanical Designer for a major U.S. crane manufacturer. While designing cranes, Curt’s drawing talent was called upon to prepare conceptual drawings of various lift crane designs.

Curt became a member of the Art Market Gallery (AMG) in downtown Knoxville in September 2020.  His artwork is on display, he is active on committees, and is currently a member of the AMG Board of Directors.

Curt’s main focus in art is drawing weathered barns he finds from his travels across the Midwest, Kentucky, and Tennessee. He has over 200 pen and ink drawings of barns he keeps in a hardbound journal. Curt has titled the journal “Palaces on the Prairies”. His goal is to publish a book containing his drawings of old barns. Curt states, “Barns are disappearing from our country’s landscape at an ever-increasing rate. Barns are a part of our Americana. The book is my way of memorializing and sharing my fascination of old, weathered barns with people.”

Curt’s early pen and ink drawings were drawn using a quill type pen and ink from a bottle. Curt made drawings of mushrooms, fruits, animals, and barns. As time went on and the advancement of technical ink pen design improved, Curt was able to perfect his techniques for producing fine line drawings and more detail. Curt uses the fine tipped pens as a brush than an instrument to draw lines. As the tip of the pen wears away from use, it will produce lighter and finer lines, allowing different effects. The different effects from the pens allow Curt to produce less intense (lighter) lines for shading and drawing of wood grain with the pens.

By using colored pencils to his drawings Curt’s artwork “jumped” off the paper. That’s when Curt’s art took off. Curt now adds color to all his artwork, from birds, to plants, to barns, and more.

Curt’s attention to detail comes from his career as a mechanical designer. Curt’s includes a lot of detail in his drawings. The detail is what makes Curt’s drawings unique.

The ORUUC Gallery is open during church office hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sundays. Please note that the church will be closed for the holidays Tuesday, Dec. 24 until Monday, Jan. 6. For more information on displaying your works at ORUUC, please contact Nancy Starr at starroakridge@gmail.com.

This Sunday, join us for our December worship series, Presence. Our minister, Lóre Stevens, will lead worship with a sermon titled, “Incarnation.”

In the holiday season, we may hear a lot about “incarnation.” What does it mean for each of us to be part of the universe or the divine incarnate? How can our embodiment and our community be paths towards spiritual liberation?

Worship begins at 10 a.m. in person and on Zoom. For those attending worship by Zoom, please install the Zoom app on your device and use Zoom Worship Service Meeting ID: 946 8973 5846.

Our Split-the-Plate offering recipient for the month of December will go to the Free Medical Clinic. This non-profit organization offers free medical services to those who live in Anderson, Roane, and Morgan Counties, serving people who do not have insurance and cannot afford to pay for medical services due to their income level. Because it is a primarily volunteer organization, it relies on donations from individuals, churches, and community groups. This clinic provides medical care to those who have no other resources–it can literally mean the difference between life and death for some people. We all deserve adequate health care and to be treated with worth and dignity. Please GIVE HERE as you are willing and able, or text “ORUUC” to 73256.

After worship, join us for our annual holiday Soup Potluck in the Social Hall! Bring a soup to share—but don’t worry if you can’t or don’t—there should be plenty. There will be no Youth Faith Formation classes today, but there WILL be OWL classes and adult classes during Faith Formation hour (11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.). Another ORUUC tradition begins at noon: Cocoa and Caroling! The nursery will be available during worship and the Faith Formation hour. Check out our regular Faith Formation opportunities for adults here: http://www.oruuc.org/faith-formation-for-adults and children and youth here: http://www.oruuc.org/religious-education.

Covid-19 Update: Masks are not required in the building; whether joining us for worship in person or on Zoom, we encourage everyone to do what makes them feel comfortable.

All are welcome! We look forward to seeing you!
